There's a crazy General that orders a plan R to be carried out. Plan R is a nuclear attack on Russia. There are all kinds of fail safes in the plan so that the Russians (or the Americans) can't call off the strike. His whole premise for wanting to bomb the Russians is because he says that they are taking over Americans minds by fluoridating the water. Totally random. The military people are hilarious. Here's a few of the greatest lines from the movie:
"Gentlemen. You can't fight in here. This is the war room."
"Look here Colonel Batguano, if that is your real name."
"Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed, but I do say; no more than 10 to 20 million people killed. Tops! Depending on the breaks."
There are quite a few more but they're only funny in context. Go see it. It's funny. I mean just look at the title.

Dr Strangelove is neither mindless nor random. It's all about CONTEXT.
The movie came out in the midst of oodles of cold-war talk. You know, the days when they were still teaching kids to sit under their desks if a bomb hit? It was just trying to show us how utterly ridiculous we all were. It achieved that marvelously.
I agree, but you know with our friends I have to call it random and mindless or they won't want to see it. I loved the movie and totally agree that it was making fun that whole situation. I mean the whole talk about living in caves because of the doomsday machine going off. It was great. Wait, did I just call all my friends stupid...can they see this...SHOOT!
...we'll meet again, I don't know when, I don't know where... The best! Did you know this was John Lennon's favorite movie? It's pretty great. Especially all the parts he does.
